Bunk Sandwiches. Where do I even begin?
I guess I’ll begin with the Italian Cured Meats sandwich which is where my love of this place first started several years ago after I heard about the mysterious sandwich place on the east side that had a line out the door and around the corner for lunch – every day. At first I was like “What? That’s cray. No where’s like that for lunch – that’s a brunch thing!” But then, like a true Portlander, I had to see this line for myself. (Seriously, I think there’s some sort of gene Portlanders have to want to wait in line for food – how else do you explain the never ending line at Whole Bowl or Screen Door?)
Anyway, it was true. I waited in line a good 30 minutes. And then this happened. By this, I mean this beautiful sandwich to my left. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. For the longest time, this was my sandwich of choice. Why mess up a good thing when you’ve got it down, right? I had this sandwich several times. Even when they opened their new downtown location, and were featured on Best Sandwich in America for their Pork Belly Cubano, I still stuck by my guns.
And then, this happened:Meatball Parmigiano Hero from Bunk Sandwiches AKA Heaven
I mean. Sorry cured meats, I’ve moved on to a new main squeeze and it’s the Meatball Parmigiano Hero. I can’t even…I’m not even going to try to explain this majesty because the photo just does the work for me. Holy meatballs, Batman. Holy cheese, Louise. This happened. And then it happened again…over, and over, and over again. Yeah – you know what I mean.
I’m sure there are lots of other delicious sandwiches here – I’ve even tried a few. But once you go Meatball, you never go back. At least that’s what I always say.
